James Downey: EU leaders may as well have stayed on holidays
AS summit meetings go -- and they seldom go very far -- this week's encounter between Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy was about as bad as these things get.
I for one can't see the point of the exercise, and I greatly doubt if either of them could explain it if they tried.
They had two items on their agenda: the debt crisis and moves toward deeper European unity. In the normal course, if such a thing existed, I would be delighted to see the two questions linked and an opportunity seized.
