I've abandoned any thoughts of a wedding and having a family

A PUBLIC servant, who is single, earns a salary of €52,000 a year and is at risk of defaulting on his mortgage? Surely some mistake. Yet this is what an educational administrator says keeps him awake at night.

John doesn't want his full name published -- he doesn't want his colleagues knowing about financial woes. And there are no doubt many on the minimum wage who would quibble with his concerns. "I know that I am much better off than a lot of people," he says. But...

"While I am not yet in danger of default, it is now a growing concern for me. I started working six years ago in my 40s in an Institute of Technology. I was on a salary of approximately €50,000, and single so I was in a good position to get a starter home," he explains.
