In the end, even Norris's relentless optimism couldn't overcome reality
DAVID Norris had planned his birthday celebration for months beforehand. He was not going to allow a looming crisis in his presidential campaign to spoil the party.
The senator packed a bag and left his home in Dublin last Thursday evening to celebrate his birthday on Sunday in the course of a weekend retreat with a group of old friends.
Earlier that day, he had arranged for copies of letters he had written 15 years ago to be given to a Sunday newspaper. It was a calculated gamble designed to give him some control over a story that had been threatening to break all week.
