How we learned more of Gerry in death than in life
On the first anniversary of Gerry Ryan's sudden death, Maeve Sheehan finds many of his friends still reluctant to talk about his passing
GERRY Ryan died a year ago next Saturday, and family and friends are preparing to remember the late broadcaster.
His widow, Morah, and their five children, Bonnie, Rex, Charlotte, Elliot and Babette, will remember him as any other family grieving the death of a husband and father with a mass: "It will be small, it will be family and I think it will be private," said family friend and PR woman Joanne Byrne.
Melanie Verwoerd, his partner for two years before his death, will honour his memory in her own way. Friends will gather to remember him too; there has been talk of it but nothing formal yet, said one, but his friends will meet up next Saturday and RTE will mark the day. A spokeswoman for 2FM, which hosted his show, said, "Friends and colleagues of Gerry will mark this anniversary in their own private way." Fans have posted anniversary messages on a dedicated Facebook page: "Gerry's first anniversary on Saturday 30th April 2011. RIP Gerry:-)"
