'Hold me back, let me at them' as TDs get stuck into banks

HOW far the banking fraternity (and it is most definitely a fraternity as the top banking brass are, almost to a man, men) has fallen. In fact, they've plummeted further and faster than Felix Baumgartner, but with far less grace.

Once they were heroes, dispensing spondulicks like Smarties to every dog, divil and developer who put their hand out -- but now they're pinstriped pariahs and everyone's piling into them.

It was Bash the Bankers Day in Leinster House yesterday, with politicians lining up to have a go. In fact, the kicking had begun on Tuesday, when one of the most senior regulators in the Central Bank got stuck into the banks for their sullen reluctance to tackle the nightmare of mortgage arrears through the Mortgage Arrears Resolution Strategy, otherwise known as MARS.
