Higgins heralds a new era where we can dare to hope

Gusts of gale-swept rain lashed against Dublin Castle, but so too the winds of change blew within its grey-stone walls yesterday, whistling through the elegant ceremonial hall as the ninth President of Ireland spoke of his hopes and our dreams.
"Every age, after all, must have its own Aisling and dream of a better, kinder, happier, shared world," declared Michael D Higgins, minutes after he had made the declaration and tightly clasped the burnished silver seal of office.
It's a storm-battered nation to which he has just pledged to dedicate the next seven years of his life -- one buffeted and crushed by economic tempests at home and abroad.
