Helen Moorhouse: Enda, child benefit is a line in the sand for this country's middle classes

POOR Geppetto. Middle-aged, single parent of one. Lost his child benefit. Cos his kid's not a real boy. Thankfully, the last time I checked, my children were real.

And if Social Welfare comes to call, I'm ready with birth certs, passports, fingerprints, DNA swabs, dental records, utility bills and the last three bank statements to prove it -- whatever they want, they can have.

Because if I can prove that my children exist, the Geppettos out there -- who are claiming child benefit for imaginary ones -- will give up their fraudulent ways and everything will be just fine. Right?
