This is no ordinary Sunday. With Liverpool playing Arsenal live on Sky Sports on the first weekend of the new Premier League season, it is a Super Sunday, the first of many to come.
Many of us can't remember what life was like in the days when Sunday was just Sunday, when there was no such thing as a Ford Super Sunday or even a Grand Slam Sunday. How did men live?
Yet even the aficionados are not blind to the occasional flaws which appear in the rich tapestry of our national sport. We were probably the first to realise how the financial system works these days, when we saw grand old institutions such as Liverpool and Manchester United being "bought" by American wizards, using borrowed money which the club itself would then have to repay, with interest.
