Critics of this minority Government were quiet after the passing of the Budget. With an increased number of actors having a significant say over the Budget's make-up, its passing fuelled a new sense of optimism within Government circles that this limp and unstable administration may just last the course.

Fine Gael's Paschal Donohoe illustrated why he was the ideal appointment as Public Expenditure Minister.

His ability to rein in his colleagues - who at one point had submitted €3bn in spending demands - is reassuring from the public's perspective.
