Good golly, Miss Molly

John Costello

Her name has launched a thousand Irish pubs and given Dublin its unofficial anthem, but according to a newly uncovered 18th-century book, it may not have been just cockles and mussels that Molly Malone was selling to passers-by.

The fishmonger plied her trade on the cobbled streets of Dublin, but there has always been speculation over whether poor Molly was more trollop than market trader.

While such scurrilous rumours surrounding her virtue are nothing new -- her iconic statue on Dublin's Grafton Street was quickly dubbed The Tart With The Cart -- the discovery of new lyrics in Wales suggests the seedy speculation could well be close to the mark.
