John Boland Two-thirds of the way through Seamus Heaney's 1996 collection, The Spirit Level, there is a poem entitled 'A Call,' in which the poet pays a visit to a friend or neighbour. While he's waiting for the man to appear from weeding in the garden he hears the ticking of the hall clock and he gets lost in thoughts of passing time and of mortality. The last line reads: "Next thing he spoke and I nearly said I loved him."
