CONTROVERSY over regional aviation subsidies is not just an Irish issue. It features in some of the fiercest legal conflicts raging in the EU Commission and in the European Court of Justice.

The issue has also caused the mighty Ryanair to come a temporary cropper on its home turf.

Airports are seen as major levers of economic growth. Heathrow funnels millions to feed the economy of London and south-east England and it is tempting to believe a small airport like Kerry or Galway can do likewise.
