Fine Gael seems determined to stay glued to that self-destruct button
Never have times been better for opposition parties, but Enda and Co are their own worst enemy, says Celia Larkin
'Encourage individuals to use their talents in their own ways and they will often turn a squirrel cage of frustration into a ladder of success.' (Crawford H Greenewalt)
THE Fine Gael powers that be should take note of Greenewalt's quote when threatening to hamper Lucinda Creighton's political career by running a second, third or fourth candidate alongside her in the Dublin South East constituency. One need only look back as far as last year's local elections and the demise of Maurice Ahern, when some members of the Drumcondra Mafia attempted to sabotage Mary Fitzpatrick's electoral chances, to understand why adopting such a strategy is political folly.
I hate to tell Fine Gael this, but it can run as many candidates as it likes: the people will decide. Backing Lucinda into a corner may well be the making of her.
