THERE I was, hunkering down for an English victory. The shouty anchorman on Sky Sports News had just told me that the bookies had established England as the favourite to host 2018.

Rightly so. After a final presentation of slick brilliance, it seemed anything might be possible: you could put a bet on England beating Germany in a final at Wembley and the odds were a mere 100-1. Those folk in facepaint braving the chill in Manchester and Milton Keynes would surely soon have something to warm their cockles.

All logic pointed to an England win. This time the lads would do it, wouldn’t they?
