FG members 'go through Mathews for a short-cut'

THE normally genteel atmosphere of Fine Gael meetings in the leafy suburbs of liberal southside Dublin degenerated into a shouting match last Monday night.

Rebel TD Peter Mathews was involved in angry exchanges over his stance on the abortion legislation with members of the old Dublin South constituency, now known as Dublin Rathdown, including Justice Minister Alan Shatter.

The downstairs function room in Charlie Chawke's well-known south Dublin hostelry, The Goat Bar & Restaurant, was the scene for what a party source present at the meeting described as "an hour-and-a-half of members going through Mathews for a short-cut".
