Enduring Tale of Two Berties has finally reached its epilogue
Bertie Ahern secured both great triumphs and astonishing failures, writes John Drennan

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.'
Charles Dickens could not have known it, but his classic quote from A Tale of Two Cities is perhaps the most apposite summary of Ireland's Tale of Two Berties.
It is odd now to think that when Bertie Ahern left the Taoiseach's office in 2008 after the longest lap of honour Irish politics has seen, all that was missing was a final ceremony where -- as in Viking funerals of old -- a flaming ship would have floated down the Liffey.
