Emotionally-scarred Jackson just a 'regressed 10-year-old'
One of Michael Jackson's last wishes shows his genuine love for children, writes Eamon Keane
'I'm taking that money, a million children, children's hospital, biggest in the world, Michael Jackson's children's hospital.'' The world's biggest pop star slurred his words as he spoke through the haze of the sedatives which would later kill him. Last week, at the manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's personal physician, Doctor Conrad Murray, a recording of these plaintive words was played to the jury and media.
This tape, though, has a wider significance. It offers us a new insight into the never-ending question: did Michael Jackson genuinely care for children or was he a sexual deviant using them for his own needs?
The words suggest a man who, though strung out, still showing concern for children. They are backed up by the devastated reaction of his daughter, Paris, on seeing his body. As Dr Murray tried to administer CPR, the court was told that the singer was practically dead. Paris rushed into the room and screamed 'Daddy' and was deeply upset. True, there are paedophiles who can fool their families, but her response suggests real love between father and daughter.
