Eilis O'Hanlon: RTE is out of kilter in La La Land
For the broadcaster to behave as if it can mix it with the big boys at the BBC is absurd, writes Eilis O'Hanlon
THE biggest disappointment from the list of most highly paid RTE presenters that was published last week is that the now retired Derek Davis isn't in the top 10. Davis is one of the most underrated broadcasters this country has ever produced. The fact that he spent so many years filling in for other, higher-profile RTE presenters when they went away on another of their generous holidays is a travesty.
They should have been filling in for him.
But even Derek Davis gets it wrong sometimes. Last week, he was asked to comment on Newstalk's Right Hook about the reported €630,000 salary that Pat Kenny received in 2011. His answer was that Kenny deserved every cent because he was "our Paxman". It got me thinking, because I can, off the top of my head, think of at least a dozen interviews conducted by Paxman which have stayed in my memory for years because of a particular question which illuminated a subject in a way I hadn't considered before, whereas Pat Kenny. . . well, let's say I'm struggling.
