THEY swept aboard with relief and gratitude after long, hard and anxious journeys from all over western Europe.
They were tired, exhausted but almost childishly happy to be on the Irish Ferries' boat, Oscar Wilde, heading out of Cherbourg for Rosslare.
For a good while they sat in near silence as the sun slipped into the Atlantic and the big engines started up to tell us we were homeward bound.
