Early arrests vital if gardaí are to win war on crime in Border area

An early string of arrests and criminal charges, even against those regarded as being from the lower tiers of the IRA-related gangs, would help to convince scared members of the public to step forward to provide the badly needed local help that is vital if the godfathers are to be brought to justice.

The first real test confronting those senior Garda officers tasked with spearheading the latest crackdown on organised crime in the Border region will be to determine the role played by senior Provisional IRA figures.

The operation has been officially set up as part of the immediate response to the crime surge in Border towns and surrounding districts.

But it is inevitable that any meaningful move to impose law and order in that troubled part of the island will quickly bring the police, either north or south of the Border, into conflict with top republican figures. These godfathers still believe, sometimes with justification, that they control their own fiefdoms there.
