Eamon Delaney: Lay off the British, it's our own banks forcing property sales

It was like a scene from our history books, a depiction of the 19th-century Land War struggles, with police keeping back angry locals while inside the landlord's agents or bailiffs oversaw an eviction or flogged the wares of those unfortunate natives unable to meet their payments.

No disrespect to UK property agents Allsops, a perfectly reputable company that specialises in the fast sales of properties in arrears, but this was the scene outside Dublin's Shelbourne Hotel yesterday when the latest sale of distressed Celtic Tiger property had to be abandoned because of disruption by angry protests.

Groups including Defend Our Homes and Direct Democracy Ireland were involved, and placards outside bore distinctly anti-British slogans such as "Go home" and "Ireland is not for sale".
