Paul McGuinness’s dogged resolve got the band over the line

IN THE 1980s, when author Johnny Rogan wrote Starmakers and Svengalis, a definitive history of British pop management, he concluded that the perfect pop manager cannot exist.

His research determined that the ideal candidate for the job of manager in rock ‘n' roll should be “cautious, yet innovative; intuitive empirical; forceful yet sensitive, aggressive and reflective, not intellectually intimidating; a rhetorician and a patient, sympathetic listener”.
