Dublin's new lord mayor will be a self-serving, visionless hack
The political parties will make sure that no one with guts and real vision gets the job, writes Emer O'Kelly

There's a bit more than a snowball's chance in Hell that Dubliners may get to vote directly for a lord mayor in June. That's the target date, according to the Green Party. They have the inside track on what's going because their leader, John Gormley, is Minister for the Environment, so this falls into his bailiwick.
The lord mayor will have 'strong executive powers' whenever he or she is elected, either in June or the autumn.
For instance, the mayor will be able to instruct local-authority managers on policy, including transport. His or her authority will extend over the greater Dublin area, comprising Fingal, South Dublin and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, as well as the city-council area.
