WHEN David Drumm arrived outside the courthouse for the first day of his bankruptcy hearing in Boston, the former bank chief surprised the waiting media pack as he unpacked his papers from the big America Jeep.

He paused, walked around to his wife, tenderly held her face in his hands and kissed her as she got ready to drive off.

The closeness of the relationship between David and Lorraine Drumm didn't come up directly in Boston's bankruptcy court over the past two weeks, but it was impossible for people in and around the courthouse to miss.
