Dole shame rests with the whole body politic

After Christmas, the snow and the murder trial, reality of a different kind came crashing back last week in the form of statistics measuring the remorseless onward march of the recession.
It strikes me at this stage that there may be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy associated with the publication of these figures every month, in good times and bad.
In the good times, or what we then thought were the good times, a majority of experts enthused on the monthly publication to the effect that we had never had it so good -- which in itself, at a level, had helped fuelled the boom.
