Dearbhail McDonald: Statements must not subvert trial process

JUST before she broke down as she read out her victim impact statement, Rachel French described the death and gruesome disposal of her sister Rebecca's body as "something from a horror film".

Now for the French family, consumed by grief, there has been another tragic twist. Their victim impact statement almost collapsed yesterday's sentencing phase of the trial.

Two Lithuanian men were charged with Rebecca's murder and two other men, Irish and Polish, who admitted their part in the disposal and attempted destruction of her body, were charged with impeding the garda investigation.
