Dearbhail McDonald: Independence of the legal profession is under threat

ANOTHER day, another histrionic missive from Justice Minister Alan Shatter. Last week the Fine Gael TD stopped short, just, of accusing barristers of treason.
This was when he declared that the Bar Council, the representative body for barristers, were "briefing against the State" by holding a discussion on the controversial Legal Services Bill with representatives of the EU and IMF.
As major stakeholders in the debate on the future of the legal profession, excluded along with many others from any meaningful consultation on the reforms, the Bar Council was entitled to make its case to the EU/IMF.
