FOR years there has been a longstanding joke in Irish legal circles about the firewalls or 'Chinese Walls' deployed by certain barristers and law firms to manage conflicts of interest.
The punchline? They are the only other Chinese Walls that can be seen from outer space.
Whatever steps firms and lawyers take to avoid actual conflicts of interest, the perception of conflicts is much harder to eradicate.
