David Quinn: What Ireland needs is a lot more children to balance generation gap

THERE is a growing conflict between the needs of older people and the needs of younger people across all of Europe, including Ireland.

A combination of a rising older population and very expensive health and pension provisions is placing an increasing financial burden on younger people, especially young families, because young families also have children to look after.

The debate about child benefit is a case in point. The Government looks like it is targeting this for a further big cut. But the cut won't hit poorer families; instead it looks set to hit better-off and middle-income families.
