By sheer coincidence I have been in Brussels for part of this week. The trip was planned a couple of months ago. Little did I know I'd be here as Ireland faced its moment of destiny and moved inexorably closer to a bailout.

While in Brussels a Slovak who works in the European Parliament reminded me that when the member states of the EU voted to contribute to the Greek bailout, the Slovak parliament voted against the move.

That decision was enormously unpopular in Brussels but enormously popular with the people of Slovakia. The country had just been through a decade-long austerity programme to make it EU-ready.
