David Quinn: No grand new themes in narrow world of theatre
On 'Power Plays' the other night on RTE, Fintan O'Toole wondered aloud why Irish theatre failed to provide a biting critique of Celtic Tiger Ireland. It's something I wondered myself in a column eight years ago and in a talk I gave at an Irish cultural event in Japan in 2003.
At the time I was hauled on to RTE radio and upbraided for my impertinence. What did I know about theatre, who was I to ask such a question?
Fintan O'Toole cannot be so lightly dismissed because one of the various hats he wears is that of theatre critic. He is extremely well got in theatre circles and so his questions were treated with due respect.
