David Quinn: Moral blackmail makes benefit reform impossible
Sometimes when comparing how the British and Irish media cover different stories, it seems that we live not alone in a different country from Britain, but in a different world altogether.
This contrast was sharpened for me this week when listening to debates about the latest Budget. Typically, there has been huge criticism of the small changes being made to welfare benefits on the grounds that poorer people have been disproportionately hit once again.
But a story caught my eye in one of the British papers on Wednesday that entirely inverted the way our media tend to see these things. It reported how the British chancellor is to increase benefits for the sick and unemployed next year.
