David Quinn: Michael D has yet to be asked the tough questions

What values do we wish our president to espouse? My answer is that they should only espouse a minimum set of values with which we can all agree.

The president is the guardian of the Constitution above all. Apart from that, his or her job is to represent the country with a certain amount of decorum and dignity and to be a figure of unity.

This is why we should not have a Green president, or a Social Democratic president, or a Christian Democrat president. Once the president espouses a set of values that a large proportion of the electorate disagree with, the presidency automatically becomes a source of division and controversy, and it should not be that.
