WHY in the world aren't Fine Gael voters rallying around Gay Mitchell in greater numbers? He is absolutely one of their own, after all. This is what helped him to secure his party's nomination in the first place.

When the Fine Gael leadership tried to impose Pat Cox on the party, the party rebelled. They wanted a true-blue Fine Gaeler and they don't come any bluer than Mitchell.

He got the backing of a majority of the parliamentary party and a majority of the councillors. Surely they, if anyone, have their fingers on the pulse of Fine Gael voters?
