Darragh McManus: RTE should have slashed stars' salaries years ago
THE taxpayers who fund RTE might think it's about 10 years overdue, but Noel Curran's ultimatum on salaries is better late than never. The national broadcaster's director general outlined his position in stark terms: take a 30pc pay cut from 2008 levels or take off.
Big-name broadcasters on big bucks -- like Pat Kenny, Ryan Tubridy, Joe Duffy and Marian Finucane -- have no choice but to accept a reduction. Most will not like it. Some may not accept it. And Curran is prepared for the possibility that RTE may lose some of its most stellar lights.
Rationally, of course, none of those mentioned -- and several others -- have any cause to demur. RTE's lavishly paid presenters are in the same boat as the rest of us and everyone must share the pain. The days of paying ridiculous money to anyone, from lowly plumber to glamorous TV star, are over.
