Daniel McConnell: 'Powerful forces' fail in bid to oust McGuinness

Attempt to politicise PAC behind moves to taint chairman.

Last Thursday's showdown at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) – during which under-fire chairman John McGuinness faced down questions from his own members about his time as a junior minister – was an extraordinary event that flipped from farce to the fantastical.

For three-and-a-half hours, McGuinness, who has been subjected to a string of newspaper articles, calmly and comprehensively answered all questions about the controversial articles.

But before it ended, the meeting took a sinister turn when FG TD John Deasy made a most extraordinary claim.
