Cure for gruelling shifts will be hard to find

WE know that tired workers are more likely to make mistakes – and an exhausted doctor could cost a patient their life.

The warning about the dangers of junior doctors working gruelling shifts without proper rest or sustenance has echoed for decades now – and yet there is no resolution.

Their hours have been described as inhumane and many Irish trainees, educated at great expense to the taxpayer, are choosing to go abroad rather than endure the conditions here.
