Lucinda Creighton has warned that Irish political life is being destroyed by what she called "a deathly culture of brutal pragmatism" and said her forced resignation was "sad and unnecessary".

She also compared the current regime to the "Haughey era".

The former Minister for European Affairs said: "What happened to me last week is not important; what is far more important is the unhealthy state of Irish politics where you're expected to make up the numbers, curry favour for promotion and that's all it is about ultimately."
