It's a sorry state of affairs when delivering a major speech on Brexit serves as respite from the political battles of the day.

And yet, there was a sense that the Taoiseach didn't quite manage to capitalise on the moment.

Under the starry lights of the Round Room in Dublin's Mansion House, Enda Kenny had a captive audience for what was expected to be one of his major Brexit speeches - his version of Theresa May's Lancaster House address - delivered with just weeks to go until the negotiation trigger is pulled.
