Coalition tries to shine a ray of light into darkness
THE end of the world is not nigh. That's the message Finance Minister Michael Noonan is trying to convey, as he charts the course for the public finances over the next four years.
His reassuring words will no doubt be followed by Taoiseach Enda Kenny in his address to the nation. They are right to worry that the euro crisis, and the flood of comment and analysis on the scale of the crisis facing Ireland, has left many people close to a state of terror -- and the rest merely frightened.
The figures in the 'Medium Term Fiscal Statement' give an insight into the practical reasons why the Government would like us to worry a bit less. They believe that, if we did, we might spend some more in the shops and help the economy that way.
