Coalition left at mercy of left-wing minority

Germany's proposed new coalition agreement does not signal a radical change of direction for Europe's biggest economy but does indicate there could be problems ahead.

First of all, the deal has to get past the membership of the Social Democrats and that means Angela Merkel had to give concessions to woo Germany's left wingers, a tiny minority of voters.

That could be politically hazardous for the chancellor, who must go against her instincts and her voters and could create new problems in the economy.
