Centrica's arrival could be good news in the long term

THE sale of Bord Gais Energy should not have any immediate impact on customers -- all of their accounts will continue to operate as normal.

But politicians and consumer groups will be on the alert for possible price hikes, after Centrica's UK unit British Gas -- which supplies gas and electricity -- raised its UK consumer energy prices by 9.2pc in October just 11 months after an earlier 6pc price rise.

The company has since reduced the level of price increases following an outcry.
