Being neither an insomniac nor a drunk I prefer to tune into RTE's Oireachtas Report at a time of my own choosing rather than the early morning hour when it is transmitted. It's often a better option than the regular current affairs waffle with the same old pundits spouting on the same old topics. At least Oireachtas Report shows politicians who can – if they so wish – influence the affairs of the nation.

OK, sometimes the speeches and debate can be beyond abysmal, but often they can be engaging and sometimes even quite exceptional. And that's not just because you happen to be tipsy when watching.

Last week Senator Marc MacSharry caught my attention as I watched him speak about the need for a criminal investigation into the Anglo Tapes.
