AVERY senior civil servant once confided to me that, as far as he was concerned, the public's "right to know" was a load of hogwash. Since I worked in a newspaper and was about to marry his daughter, he thought I ought to know where he stood on the matter.

Fair enough. At least he was straight about it. Trouble is, his disdain for the public's right to know is shared by just about everyone charged with running the country.
