Brendan O'Connor: It's such an anti-climax -- so what do we do now?
So what are we going to do now? For months now we have comforted ourselves by focusing on and arguing about one very small piece of the big jigsaw.
And it was easy. It focused everything on one little answer. As if life was as simple, as binary, as black or white, as yes or no. All made even more comforting by the fact that we knew ultimately what the answer would be. 'Yes'.
60/40. There was hardly ever any doubt. So one could afford to be irresponsible and have a bit of a protest, to flirt with the double barrels of the quasi left -- Mary Lou and Boyd Barrett -- and say 'No'. Because we knew that there were enough fearful and responsible people out there to carry the 'Yes'. So we could refuse our cake if we wished and still eat it.
