Big Phil: has Enda's loyal friend become a political liability?
The bond between Phil Hogan and Enda Kenny is being tested to the limits, says Brendan O'Connor
Big Phil was in the wars again at the MacGill Summer School last week. It's hard to be in the wars at the MacGill Summer School given it's a bit of a political luvvie love-in.
But Big Phil had to go in the back door to avoid rambunctious protesters, including Spider-Man. Enda, meanwhile, seems to have wandered around unhindered up there. And sometimes it feels as if that is the biggest thing Enda owes Phil, the fact that Phil takes the crap for everyone else, mainly Enda. Phil is Enda's portrait in the attic.
But, of course, they say that Enda owes his old pal much more than that. They say Enda would never have got to be Taoiseach at last without Phil. That it was Phil going around issuing threats and inducements to various people that allowed Enda to survive the heave, and then become Taoiseach by acclaim, swinging his massive majority around.
