"I'm just hoping they're not Republican dogs," joked the North's finance minister to Brian Hayes.

The two ministers were at the Battle of the Boyne site yesterday morning to open the lovely new Victorian Gardens and unveil a sculpture. And both of them were in jolly form -- Brian, who is the ministerial overlord of the Office of Public Works (OPW), had just announced that henceforth there would be free admittance to all OPW sites (Newgrange, the Rock of Cashel and suchlike) on the first Wednesday of every month.
