AS he whiled away the last few months of his prison sentence for abduction, multiple rape and attempted murder, Larry Murphy filled in two forms.

Sitting in the comfort of his single cell at Dublin's Arbour Hill Prison, Murphy exercised his constitutional right to apply for a passport and for a renewal of his driver's licence.

Because he had spent just over a decade in prison after being caught trying to suffocate a woman in the boot of his car, his old driver's licence was out of date.
