SO the fightin' Irish are being asked to put down their dukes and envelop each other in a group hug. Party politics is to be put to one side in favour of the greater good of the nation and its citizens.

We are in desperate times and we do need desperate measures. You don't need to be an expert in either politics or economics to work out that consensus among our political parties would be the best course of action for us now, and would please international onlookers no end. But it would require an awful lot: our political class to park their ambitions and egos; Fianna Fail to surrender power; and the opposition parties to temporarily quell their thirst for it.
