Aine Kerr: Planned shake-up must be matched by political courage

FINE Gael has long promised a plan to radically overhaul public services and yesterday, they delivered the framework and template for finally kick-starting that vision.

But their carefully crafted 84-page document, outlining 100 ideas for reforming the public sector, is long on aspirations while often short on specifics.

The key areas on which Fine Gael will be judged centre on commitments to reduce the public service numbers by 10pc or 30,000, cut the number of state bodies and companies by 145, and introduce new levels of accountability for civil servants and ministers entrusted with taxpayers' money.
